About Me
Radical Radiator Repair

I had a car a few years ago that seemed to always have one problem after another. Finally, I got tired of paying for repair after repair, knowing that I was just going to end up paying again in a month or so. I wanted to save up for a better car, but I couldn’t do it if I was always paying the mechanic. So the next time that my car started overheating, I decided to fix it myself. I bought some tools, checked some books on car repair out of the library, looked up answers to my questions online, and pulled parts from old cars at the junkyard. And eventually, I fixed it. You can fix your own car problems too. I started this website to help people who are trying to learn how to be their own mechanics. If I can do it, you can do it.

3 Ways To Help Your Car Battery Last Longer

Bobbie Jones

Your car's battery is the heart of its electrical system. The battery provides the car enough power to start. Once your car is going, the alternator charges your battery back up so that that the next time you need your car to start, there is enough juice on the battery. That's why you need to make sure that your battery lasts as long as possible.

1. Check Your Battery Regularly: Inside your battery is some electrolyte fluid. It is also called battery acid. You can actually check that fluid level out regularly. Keeping that topped off will help make sure that your battery lasts a long time. If you need to replace the fluid, you should only use store bought fluid or distilled water.

If you add in anything else, you run the risk of making your battery stop working. You can check the fluid level by very carefully lifting off the caps off the reservoirs on your battery. This needs to be done monthly. You need to make sure that electrolyte fluid is over the battery plates inside each reservoir.

2. Make Sure Your Battery Stays Charged: If you don't do a lot of driving, your battery may not be fully charged up. You should make sure that you take a nice long drive about once a week to make sure that your battery gets fully charged. It can help extend your battery's life and make it start better. If driving around like that isn't something that you can do, you can get a plug-in charger that you can hook up to your battery to charge it up fully.

3. Keep Your Battery Clean: If you look at the connections on your battery, you may see that there is some corrosion. That corrosion can cause your battery to drain down faster. You can clean it off. Before you do, you need to make sure that you take the connectors off first. You don't want to start cleaning the battery while it is connected; you could get hurt.

So, loosen any nuts holding the connectors on the battery posts and lift them off. Keep them separated. Then you can take a wire brush and start cleaning off the corrosion. If you have to work on the battery, make sure that you don't touch both posts at the same time.

Keeping your battery running longer saves you money and keeps your car in better shape. To learn more, contact a company like Hub Auto Supply with any questions or concerns you have.
