About Me
Radical Radiator Repair

I had a car a few years ago that seemed to always have one problem after another. Finally, I got tired of paying for repair after repair, knowing that I was just going to end up paying again in a month or so. I wanted to save up for a better car, but I couldn’t do it if I was always paying the mechanic. So the next time that my car started overheating, I decided to fix it myself. I bought some tools, checked some books on car repair out of the library, looked up answers to my questions online, and pulled parts from old cars at the junkyard. And eventually, I fixed it. You can fix your own car problems too. I started this website to help people who are trying to learn how to be their own mechanics. If I can do it, you can do it.

Storing Your RV

Bobbie Jones

After a fabulous spring, summer, and fall traveling the country in your RV, you plan to park it until the cold weather breaks. Before you do so, you need to make sure you complete certain maintenance tasks. In addition, you should prep it properly for storage.

Location

If you do not have a covered area where you can park your vehicle, take the time to find a good outdoor location. Avoid parking under trees or in weedy areas so that you can keep branches and other debris away from your RV.  No matter where you park your RV, invest in a good fabric cover that breathes. Otherwise, you will be creating a great breeding ground for mildew and mold.

Rodent Control

You do need to clean your RV from top to bottom before you store it. Of course, you want things sparkling and ready to go when the weather gets warm, but more importantly, cleaning everything, particularly the drawers where you store food, will help keep mice and rats out of your vehicle. A rodent infestation will do more than leave a mess behind. The dirty creatures can chew up your mattress and bite through your wiring. They can also wreak havoc on your vehicle's insulation. Close up any areas that allow pests to enter your RV. Also, consider scattering mothballs around any linens or other fabric items you may be keeping in the RV.

Battery

If you are storing your RV close by your winter quarters, you can leave the battery in as long as you plan to occasionally start up the vehicle. If you will be storing it where you will not have this type of access, you should remove the battery. Make certain that it is fully charged and keep it where it will not freeze. If removing the battery seems too difficult, you can still disconnect the negative battery cable to save wear on the battery. However, it should still be fully charged.

Safely storing your RV for the winter requires some thought and a little effort. In addition to regular winterizing tasks, you need to find the right place to store your vehicle. If you do not have access to a covered area, buy a good fabric cover and park it away from areas prone to debris. The biggest favor you can do yourself is to "rodent proof" the RV so that you will not face serious repair bills when the weather warms up. Taking time to store your vehicle correctly means you will be able to hit the road again as soon as the temperatures rise.
